India is betting on LED lighting to reduce carbon emissions India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, behind only the United States and China.
One of the great villains in the country is the energy matrix that is not sustainable and is still very dependent on coal. About 70% of the nation's emissions come from the energy sector. But the South Asian giant has been struggling to reduce its carbon footprint. One of the fronts is the investment in electric efficiency - the country wants to be the first in the world to supply all its lighting needs with the use of LEDs.
Mumbai at night. India wants to improve efficiency in energy consumption for urban and domestic lighting.
India is the third largest emitter of greenhouse gases, second only to the United States and China.
To help India achieve this goal, the United Nations Environment Program and partners develop the Creating and Maintaining Markets for Energy Efficiency initiative, a project to advance the sustainability agenda and foster technological innovations in the lighting sector. The use of LEDs can reduce energy consumption by 50 to 70% compared to other technologies.
